About the Parsha
In Emor we read about the holidays and festivals in the Jewish calendar, including the weekly Shabbat (Sabbath), Pesach (Passover), Shavuot, Rosh HaShana (the New Year), and Sukkot.
About the Dessert
My son was inspired by the page in his Parsha book, “Dafta’ot,” and wanted to make a dessert that looked like the illustration here.
Make a batch of gingerbread dough (recipe here).
Roll out half the dough.
Cut out a large rectangle for the base. Bake a bit longer than instructed (as it is a large cookie).
Roll out the second half of the dough for the details:
Use a sharp knife to cut out small rectangles for the train cars.
Using the point of a knife, carefully cut out shapes: Shofar, apple, a square for the Sukkah, a Lulav and Etrog, Matza, Kiddush cup, Har Sinai, the Luchot (Tablets), a Challah and candles.
After baked and cooled, decorate all the cookies using royal icing in white, yellow, red, green and black.
Draw a train track on the base using black icing in a piping bag.
Use a bit of icing to adhere each train car and each holiday detail to the base.
Add mini Oreo cookies for the wheels (or make small round cookies with the leftover cookie dough).
