About the Parsha
In Lech Lecha we read about the Brit bein habetarim (the Covenant Between the Parts). G-d instructs Avraham (Abraham) to take 3 heifers, 3 goats, 3 rams, a turtledove and a young bird. Avraham cut the large animals in half and left the birds whole. (This appears to follow an ancient custom of passing between halved animals to seal a covenant.)
About the Dessert
We made a chocolate cake baked in individual cups.
We used chocolate ganache (recipe here) to coat each cupcake.
The animals were made using melted chocolate, white and dark.
I printed pictures of the specific animals (3 each of the large animals, 1 each of the birds).
Placing a piece of parchment paper over the printed pictures, we piped melted chocolate to trace the shapes. First, we piped dark chocolate to make the outlines and the details. We allowed them to harden in the fridge. We then piped the white chocolate to fill in the shapes. Allowed these to harden. When removed from the paper, we got each complete picture in 2 colors.
We carefully cut each animal in half and placed each piece on a cupcake.
