About the Parsha
In Shmini we learn the laws of kosher animals: Land animals may be eaten only if they have split hooves and chew their cud. Fish must have fins and scales. A list of non-kosher birds is given, as well as a list of kosher insects.
About the Dessert
These cookies represent some of the kosher and non-kosher animals.
These are store-bought Oreo cookies (any round cookie can be used) iced with royal icing (recipe here).
Decorations and details were made using colored icing, piped using plastic sandwich bags with the corner snipped off. For the embellishments I used cut pieces of fondant (marshmallows can be cut up for these as well).
The bird feathers were strips cut from sour stick candy.
The fish scales were made using heart-shaped sprinkles, placed in overlapping rows.
