About the Parsha
In VaYishlach we read about the passing of Rachel Imeinu (our Matriarch) who died in childbirth on the way to Canaan. Yaakov (Jacob) buries her along the route.
About the Dessert
Kever Rachel (Rachel’s Tomb) is and always has been an important landmark for the Jewish people. This cake represents the modern-day site of this tomb.
Make a vanilla cake in a loaf pan (English cake pan).
Remove the cake from the pan and trim all sides, so you end up with a rectangular brick.
Cut the brick in half, saving half for the main building.
Cut the other half into a cube and a smaller rectangle.
Use whatever large-ish piece you have left to make the dome.
Make a batch of buttercream frosting (recipe here).
Assemble the structure using frosting to stick the parts together.
Use a spoon to scoop out a cave-like entrance to the building.
Cover the whole structure with the white frosting.
To make the brick siding:
Melt some chocolate chips in a small bowl.
Using the back of a spoon or a chopstick (or even a knife), dip the point into the chocolate, and draw the lines to make the bricks of the building. Keep dipping into the chocolate as needed.
